The Change Makers: Using Tech for Good

WIRED’s deputy global editorial director Greg Williams explores how Boots, Moneyhub and Accenture are embracing new technologies to use tech for good.

The power technology has to enable positive change has never been clearer and more pertinent. Companies across all industries are using tech for good by increasing accessibility and inclusivity; overhauling health and wellbeing; harnessing AI and machine learning; creating viable and scalable sustainability solutions; re-engineering education and upskilling; and opening up opportunity, access to investment and capital, and providing security.

As a leader in healthcare, Richard Corbridge, chief information officer at Boots, sees a huge opportunity in using tech for good, “by creating a hub capability for patients. This can consolidate the disparate healthcare pieces of information into one place.”

Looking forward, it’s imperative that companies provide accessible and customer-centric offerings like this, agrees Samantha Seaton, chief executive officer at Moneyhub.

“The time has finally come when you have to put the customer first. The companies that are going to survive in the real world, and in the metaverse, are the ones where they put the customer at the center of what they're doing” explains Seaton.

For organizations to adopt a more innovative way of thinking and successfully implement new technologies and accelerate digital transformation, they must focus on upskilling workforces whilst being more agile and nimble.

“Emerging technologies, such as augmented and mixed reality, are the potential connecting tissue between the digital world and the real world,” says Accenture’s metaverse expert, Nick Rosa. “It’s possible to use 3D data to design a product, as well as provide manuals and virtual-reality training for employees who will build the product.”
